Ukraine's second ranked player Elina Svitolina (WTA No. 21) refused to play at the WTA 250 tournament in Palermo, Italy. In her statement, the 29-year-old from Odesa explained her decision by health problems.

Our compatriot promised to return to competitions on the WTA tour as soon as her physical condition allows her to do so. Elina also thanked everyone for their support and understanding.

"Following the advice of my physiotherapists and medical team, I withdrew from the Internazionali Femminili di Tennis di Palermo tournament. I really wanted to play in front of an incredible crowd in Palermo, but I need to take care of my health," the Ukrainian said in a press release.

The 2024 Olympic Games start in Paris on July 27. Without a performance in Palermo, Svitolina risks being left without practice before the Olympic tennis tournament, where she will participate.

On July 8, Svitolina burst into tears after defeating China's Wang Xinyu (6-2, 6-1) in the 1/8 finals of Wimbledon.

Elina could not contain her emotions as she recalled the Russian missile attack on Okhmatdyt children's hospital in Kyiv.
