Svitolina reached the 1/8 finals of the Australian Open with a historic victory
Ukraine's top-ranked player Elina Svitolina (WTA No. 23) has reached the last 16 of the Australian Open tennis tournament, which is taking place in Melbourne from January 14-28. In the third round of the Australian Open, the 29-year-old from Odesa defeated Switzerland's Victoria Golubic in two sets, 6-2, 6-3.
For the first time in history, Ukraine will be represented by three tennis players at the Australian Open at this stage of the tournament. Prior to that, Marta Kostiuk, who defeated Elina Avanesyan, and Dayana Yastremska, who beat Emma Navarro, reached the fourth round.
This is also a record for Ukraine in terms of representation in the 1/8 finals at all Grand Slams.
The match was easy for our compatriot. The Ukrainian immediately took a 3-0 lead, not giving her opponent a chance.
In the second game, Elina took the first three sets without any problems, but then stalled a bit. The 31-year-old Swiss managed to restore the balance (3:3). The key moment came at 4:3, when Svitolina broke on her second attempt.
Immediately after the victory, Svitolina approached the camera and wrote "Glory to the heroes".
Elina will compete for the quarterfinals against Czech Republic's Linda Nosková (WTA No. 50), who sensationally beat world number one Iga Szwietek (WTA No. 1) the day before.
On December 18, Svitolina easily overcame the second round of the competition, defeating Bulgaria's Victoria Tomova.
