The attackers of the young Ukrainian basketball player Volodymyr Yermakov, who died of stab wounds on the evening of February 11, and his friend have been detained. The identity of the perpetrators and their motives are still unknown, and the second victim, our compatriot, is in a stable serious condition.

The spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oleh Nikolenko, wrote on his Facebook page that the police are investigating. According to him, the Consulate General of Ukraine in Düsseldorf, Germany, where the crime took place, has already held talks with the head of the Essen police.

According to the t-online portal, two teenagers aged 14 and 15 were detained on suspicion of murdering the Ukrainian. The conflict occurred at Oberhausen Central Station. Along with Yermakov and Kozachenko, their friends, a 14-year-old Syrian boy from Gelsenkirchen and a 13-year-old German girl with Lebanese roots, were injured.

The Ukrainians were attacked on the eve of their next match. The boys played for the ART Giants (U-19) youth team from Dusseldorf. Yermakov used to play basketball and played for the Teivaz and 5T.EAM-DUSSH-12 children's teams (born in 2006). As a member of the Ukrainian U-16 national team, he played at the 2022 European Championships in Bulgaria.

As OBOZ.UA reported, in August 2023, seventeen hooligans beat and robbed two Ukrainians in Poland. The attackers used sticks, canes, pipes, and machetes, and the reason for the aggression was the nationality of the victims.
