Someone is definitely lying: Putin and Medvedev name significantly different numbers of Russians who signed a contract with the Russian Defense Ministry

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin said that in 2023, more than 300,000 Russians signed contracts with the Ministry of Defense. By announcing this figure, he exposed the lie of Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev, or lied himself.

The Moscow Times drew attention to this. Earlier, in January of this year, the latter voiced a much higher figure – 420 thousand people. According to Medvedev, this is the number of Russians who signed a contract with the Russian Defense Ministry in 2023 to participate in the war against Ukraine.

Another 80,000 went to the front as volunteers.

At an expanded meeting of the Defense Ministry board, Putin said the following: "They came to military enlistment offices and signed contracts to serve in the armed forces. More than 300 thousand".

The head of the Russian military department, Andrei Belousov, said that this year more than 1,200 Russians sign contracts with the Defense Ministry every day.

Meanwhile, Janis Kluge, a researcher at the German Institute for International Security Studies, said that the Russian army has recently experienced a noticeable decline in recruitment.

In early December, Kluge, having analyzed the Russian federal budget, said that in the third quarter, an average of about 700 new contracts were signed daily, which is almost a third less than in the second quarter. At that time, about 1,020 people joined the army every day, and the total number of recruits for the quarter was 92,900.
