Shot people dead and set the building on fire: terrorist attack took place at Crocus City Hall, Moscow region. Photo and video
On the evening of Friday, March 22, unidentified gunmen opened fire in the Crocus City Hall concert hall in Krasnogorsk, Moscow region. At least 62 people were killed and more than 100 injured. Later, the media reported that ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack.
The shooting occurred before the start of Picnic concert, Russian media reported. People wearing camouflage opened fire on the visitors.
Some people managed to leave the building, while others hid on the ground floor. It was reported that some of the shooters barricaded themselves inside the building.
Later, a large-scale fire broke out in the building, caused by arson, and an explosion was also heard. However, rescuers could not extinguish the fire because they were waiting for the arrival of security forces.
The roof of the building began to collapse, and people were rescued from the roof of the Crocus. SOBR together with firefighters were engaged in the evacuation. Helicopters were used to extinguish the fire.
Subsequently, the number of victims increased to 140. 77 of them were hospitalized, and the bodies of the dead continued to be taken out of the Crocus. Initially, Russian media reported 12 deaths. However, later this number increased to 40. At 00:45 on March 23, it became known that the death toll was 62.
Later it was reported that a total of 115 people were hospitalized, including 5 children. Of the 110 adults, 60 were in serious condition.
A total of 6,200 people could have been in the building at the time of the shooting. Tickets for the Picnic concert were sold out.
According to eyewitnesses, gunfire was heard coming from the burning building, and a new explosion occurred there. Meanwhile, the FSB said that "law enforcement agencies are taking all necessary measures."
A few hours later, Faytuks News reported that the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist group claimed responsibility for the attack.
"Islamic State militants attacked a large gathering of Christians in the city of Krasnogorsk on the outskirts of Moscow, killing and wounding hundreds of people and causing widespread destruction," ISIS said in a statement. The militants then "safely retreated".
Due to the terrorist attack, all planned mass, sporting and cultural events in the Moscow region were canceled, and additional security measures were introduced at airports.
Mass events were also canceled in other regions of the Russian Federation, and students of Moscow universities were told not to come to class on Saturday.
It should be reminded that in early March, embassies of a number of countries warned of the threat of terrorist attacks in Russia and urged their citizens to leave the country.
Only three days ago, on March 19, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin called these warnings "outright blackmail" of Western countries. "All this looks like outright blackmail and an intention to intimidate and destabilize our society," he said.
