Second Ukrainian basketball player attacked in Germany dies
Ukrainian basketball player Artem Kozachenko has died in intensive care, according to the German basketball club ART Giants. On February 10, Artem and his friend Volodymyr Yermakov were attacked at the Oberhausen bus station.
Volodymyr and Artem suffered multiple wounds, and German doctors fought to save their lives. Yermakov died in the hospital on the morning of February 11. Kozachenko spent 10 days in intensive care.
"Unfortunately, over the past few days, his condition has deteriorated so much that the hospital could do nothing more," the ART Giants press service said in a statement.
Like 17-year-old Vova, 18-year-old Artem also played for ART Giants in the U19 Bundesliga.
"We are deeply impressed, saddened and say goodbye to another great basketball talent from our ranks. Like Vova, Artem was very popular with his teammates, coaches and friends," the obituary reads.
In addition to his great talent and dedication to basketball, Artem had a cheerful disposition and was an open-minded person. Kozachenko and Yermakov had a strong friendship.
As OBOZ.UA previously reported, on February 10, on the eve of the next match, young basketball players were attacked with knives in the street simply because they were Ukrainians.
The Ukrainian basketball community has announced a fundraiser to support the family of Volodymyr Yermakov. German police detain two underage teenagers suspected of the crime.
