Russia fired ballistic missiles into the courtyard of a high-rise building in Sumy: 11 dead, including two children, over 80 injured. Photos and video

On the evening of Sunday, November 17, the occupying Russian forces hit a high-rise building in Sumy with ballistic missiles. The residential building was heavily damaged, killing 11 people, including a nine-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl.

Another 89 people were injured – 55 adults and children. More than 400 residents were evacuated from the damaged building. The shelling was carried out with ballistic missiles, acting Sumy mayor Artem Kobzar reported on Telegram.

"On November 18-19, days of mourning for the victims of the Russian attack on the city were declared in Sumy," the city council said.

"Unfortunately, there is a lot of damage in a residential apartment building, many people are wounded. It hit the center of the courtyard, all the houses around have no windows. The State Emergency Service and police are evacuating the victims," Kobzar said.

"Tonight, on November 17, the enemy launched a missile attack on Sumy. All necessary services are working at the site of the hit. The emergency response headquarters is deploying its work in kindergarten No. 9," the city council wrote.

The city council added that the community is ready to provide temporary housing for those who have no place to spend the night. "If necessary, you should contact the headquarters that will work in kindergarten No. 9. They will advise on this issue and organize transportation to the place of overnight stay," the statement said.

The Sumy regional prosecutor's office reported that at least 10 high-rise buildings and vehicles were damaged, the number of which is being clarified.

The OGA added that 400 people were evacuated from the building, and 55 residents were injured.

"Unfortunately, there are casualties: as of now, we have received information about 8 dead, including 2 children. Several dozens are wounded. The information is constantly being updated. We are going door-to-door in all the high-rise buildings damaged by the strike. It is important to check every nook and cranny to find all the victims," the statement said.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reacted to another terrorist act of the occupiers. He called on the world to punish Russia for killing innocent people.

"A rocket attack on a nine-story building in Sumy. All the necessary services are already on the spot and a rescue operation is underway. As of now, we know about the dead and wounded, including children. My condolences to the families and friends. The criminal must be punished for the murders of innocent people," the Head of State wrote.

"We know about 52 wounded. Damaged houses, vehicles, broken glass everywhere... Sunday night for the city of Sumy became hell, a tragedy brought to our land by Russia. Rescuers, volunteers, and police are working here. More than 400 residents of the damaged houses are being evacuated. A headquarters has been set up, "invincibility points" are operating, residents of neighboring houses and even from other city districts are joining in to help the victims," said Volodymyr Artyukh, head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration.

As of 9:40 a.m. on Monday, the State Emergency Service reported that the number of victims of the rocket attack on Sumy had increased to 89 people, including 11 children.

At 8:30 p.m., the Ukrainian Air Force reported the threat of Russian troops using ballistic missiles from the northeast. In addition, groups of attack drones were spotted in Sumy region.

As a reminder, on November 17, Russian troops also attacked the border of Sumy region with artillery. The attack in Shostka district killed a 73-year-old man who was fishing on a lake. A medical facility and seven private houses were damaged.
