The Romanian castle of Cantacuzino, where the TV series Wednesday was filmed, can be visited for 270 hryvnias: where it is located and how to get there

The series Wednesday, which became a record-breaker on the Netflix streaming platform, was filmed in Romania. In particular, Cantacuzino Castle was chosen for the main scenes of the Nevermore Academy for Exiles. You can visit it for a surprisingly low price - only 270 hryvnias.

Cantacuzino is located in the Romanian Carpathians, namely in the city of Buşten. In the series, many elements of the castle were added in the editing room using graphics.

The area of the estate is 3148 square meters. It was built on the land of the Cantacuzins' hunting lodge over the course of 10 years.

The construction of Cantacuzino was completed in 1911. At one time, it was a summer home for the aristocrat and politician Prince Giorgio Grigore Cantacuzino.

The design of the location was developed by architect Grigorie Cerchez. The estate has four pavilions and original arcade balconies. They can be seen in the series.

The estate is surrounded by gardens, which include a watchtower, a courtyard and stone alleys. The latter lead to the family church. It also has several fountains.

During the Second World War, the castle was nationalized. All of its original furniture, artwork, and lighting fixtures were looted. Until 1989, it served as a hospital, and after the overthrow of socialist Romanian President Nicolae Ceausescu, the castle returned to the prince's great-granddaughter, Ioanna Cantacuzino.

The Daily Mail writes that in 2008, German lawyer and developer Kurt Neuschitzer bought Cantacuzino with the aim of turning it into a golf and ski resort. But the local government has not yet given him permission. At the same time, it is known that Neuschitzer has already spent $3.1 million on the restoration of the castle. In particular, he installed new electrical, plumbing, and heating systems.

So for now, the castle is a tourist destination. It has an art gallery, with works by Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, Vincent Van Gogh, and Henri Matisse already on display. The castle also has a restaurant and a park.

Tickets to Cantacuzino cost from 270 UAH. The castle can also be rented for parties, corporate events, or weddings.
