One of Hollywood's most controversial movies released on Netflix: what is wrong with American Psycho

Viewers of the Netflix streaming service will be able to watch the controversial horror movie American Psycho starring Christian Bale. This is one of the few films on the platform that was released before 2010, namely in 2000.

At the time of its release, the film received a fierce flurry of criticism and various theories from fans. According to the Daily Star, the protagonist Patrick Bateman is portrayed as a serial killer who tortures and stabs his victims, but some moviegoers claim that in fact all the events take place in the imagination of this New York banker.

The movie is based on the book of the same name by Bret Easton Ellis, which debuted in 1991, facing backlash then too. Because of the too violent scenes, some countries even banned the sale of the book.

Easton Ellis received about 13 death threats and was allegedly forced to "sign a declaration that he had read the threats to prevent a lawsuit against the publisher in the event that the author was killed."

The skillful work of the film's screenwriters, Gwynevere Turner and Mary Herron (also its director), managed to combine incompatible genres: thriller, horror and comedy. It was also highly praised by film critics at festivals: The National Board of Film Critics, the Chlotrudis Awards, and the International Horror Guild. In addition to being nominated, the film won these awards.

The thriller tells the story of Patrick Bateman, a successful stockbroker with a double life as a serial killer. By day, he is an inconspicuous office worker, and by night, he is a soul hunter who is proficient with cold steel and even a chainsaw.

Netflix viewers now have the opportunity to watch the legendary movie in a convenient format, and although the film has already "survived" a lot of criticism, it is making a comeback. Against the backdrop of contemporary discussions about the ethics of violence in cinema, American Psycho has once again drawn attention to its provocative plot.
