Olena Zelenska, Brigitte Macron, Queen Letizia: top 5 most stylish first ladies in history. Photo
Everything is perfect in the looks of the first ladies: a cut that perfectly outlines the figure, a shade that harmonizes with the color type, and a simple design. Who is behind this? Their stylists. They take into account the mood and personality traits of presidential wives and, of course, the protocol dress code.
Find out what are the key features of the outfits of Olena Zelenska, Queen Letizia and other first ladies. What made them fashion icons? Read all about it in the OBOZREVATEL article.
1. Olena Zelenska (First Lady of Ukraine since May 20, 2019)
The First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska has a personal stylist, Natalia Kamenska. She is the founder of the Gunia Project brand and former co-founder and designer of Lake Studio. In an exclusive interview for ELLE, she spoke about how she selects looks for the wife of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Natalia balances classics and modernity and adds interesting design elements (Wormwood brooches, a shirt with embroidered spikelets, a map of Ukraine brooch or, for example, the one in the form of the legendary rooster from Borodianka).
Zelenska, according to the stylist, communicates with the world through her looks, so her clothes are mostly created by Ukrainian designers. "I wanted the wardrobe not to make her someone else, some conventional character, another first lady, but to emphasize and extend her," Kamenska says.
As Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine continues, Natalia chooses a simple style for her VIP client: with a restrained cut and color palette. But still, each look of Olena emphasizes her strength, intelligence and resilience.
Nowadays, the first lady's wardrobe includes more suits than dresses. Natalia gave a logical explanation for this, "As for me, nowadays a suit better conveys the state of a Ukrainian woman. It is a symbol that we are focused, strong and always ready. And a men's cut pantsuit is even more confident. Why does the first lady appear in suits more and more often? It's a message to the world: Ukraine is fighting."
2. Letizia (Queen Consort of Spain since 2014)
Queen Consort Letizia is one of the most stylish first ladies in the world. During official events, she does not wear outdated tweed outfits and matching gloves, but modern suits and midi and maxi sheath dresses. The Queen can also often be seen wearing blouses and culottes or linen shirts and A-line skirts. She complements her looks with hats and shoes with sturdy heels.
Letizia's formal outfits are made by little-known Spanish designers, including Felipe Varela. Her Majesty also buys things in the mass market (Uterqüe, Mango, Zara, Massimo Dutti or Hugo Boss). It is also interesting that she wears her favorite outfits several times, which is not often practiced by first ladies and royals.
3. Brigitte Macron (First Lady of France since May 15, 2017)
The author of the unique style of the First Lady of France Brigitte Macron is Mathieu Barthelat Colin. This stylist easily creates non-standard ensembles. For example, Louis Vuitton dresses with Alexandre Vauthier and Balmain jackets. And while the first brand is traditional in the wardrobes of presidential wives, the latter two are favorites of it-girls like Hailey Bieber, Gigi Hadid, or, say, Zendaya.
In this way, Brigitte demonstrates that she is not afraid to go against protocol in favor of the latest fashion trends. One of the most striking examples is a dress with black lace trim in the chest area, which Mrs. Macron wore for a meeting of the UN General Assembly. The basis of the French First Lady's wardrobe is silhouetted skirts with slits, midi dresses, leather jackets, Slim jeans and sneakers or pumps. Of course, there are also strict suits, simple dresses and tweed jackets.
4. Carla Bruni (First Lady of France from 2008 to 2012)
Carla Bruni, First Lady of France from 2008 to 2012, made her first official visit to the palace of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain. The wife of the 23rd French President Nicolas Sarkozy wore a gray Dior coat, a matching hat, and black ballet flats. After the tabloids praised the newly minted first lady's look, she decided to continue her collaboration with Dior.
The English fashion designer John Galliano, who is the artistic director of Christian Dior, created elegant outfits for Carla that perfectly outlined her figure. Throughout Sarkozy's presidency, she wore classic suits, dresses, and coats in neutral colors. She complemented them with a minimum of jewelry. Simple and tasteful.
5. Michelle Obama (First Lady of the United States from 2009 to 2017)
Michelle Obama did not constrain herself with outdated rules and traditions in terms of clothing style. She wore what suited her. Both democratic J.Crew and extravagant Gucci and Versace Couture. For her everyday looks, Michelle Obama chose affordable brands, including Tracy Reese, Maria Pinto, Alice+Olivia, and Zero. The First Lady rarely wore pantsuits. She preferred dresses and blouses with skirts. And for good reason: they made her look feminine and elegant.
