Not Venice and not Vienna. Scientists named the most beautiful city in the world
Scientists have recognized Chester, England, as the most beautiful city in the world. Italian Venice took second place in the ranking.
The Independent reported the study, which utilized Google Street View to evaluate the architecture of cities using the "golden ratio" method—a set of proportions used by scientists and artists since ancient times. It is believed that people perceive objects that demonstrate this ratio as incredibly beautiful.
According to the study, Chester was found to be the most beautiful city in the world, with 83.7% of the buildings analyzed adhering to the golden ratio. It surpassed Venice, which scored 83.3%, while London came in third with a score of 82%.
Chester is one of the most historically significant cities in England, home to a thousand-year-old cathedral, Britain's largest Roman amphitheater, and the country's oldest racecourse.
Dr. Rebecca Andrew, a history professor at the University of Chester, quoted the words of travel writer Morton, who mentioned the city in one of his works. "He described the uniqueness of the city and its buildings: 'There is nothing like it in any other English city.' Morton was fascinated by these buildings, their history, and how lucky people were to live in such a place," she said. "He noted that Chester was so rich in beautiful old buildings that 'no one thought it strange' to drink coffee in a medieval crypt."
Colin Potts, former Chester Tourism Manager, said: "I think sometimes its beauty is taken for granted, when in fact it's a major factor in why people choose to visit Chester, live here and invest in the city. Then they discover more: Chester's people, history, and culture."
