The boxer made a frank confession

Australian IBF heavyweight champion and former sparring partner of Tyson Fury Jai Opetaia (25-0, 19 KOs) spoke about a possible fight with WBC, WBA, WBO, and IBO super heavyweight titles holder Oleksandr Usyk (23-0, 14). A few days ago, the head of the Matchroom Boxing promotional company, Eddie Hearn, said that the 29-year-old Australian was the only option for the Ukrainian champion, as there were almost no other interesting opponents left for him.

In response, Opetaia said that he would be ready for such a fight, but now his main focus is on unification fights in the cruiserweight division. According to him, a meeting with Usyk is an opportunity he could only dream of, but it's too early to talk about such a fight now, as it's just "external noise."

"Would I move up to heavyweight to beat Usyk? Yes, of course, I would. This is a fight that I would accept 100%. But he has his own goals, just like I do. It's something that can happen later, if at all," Jai said on the talkSPORT Boxing YouTube channel.

The boxer added that if the fight with Usyk becomes a reality, he will discuss it with his team, but for now, he is focused on his current tasks.

"We have a task – a fight in three weeks, on January 8. We'll do our job and then we'll look for unification fights," the Australian champion summarized.

On January 8, Opetaia will defend his title against New Zealander David Nyika.

We would like to remind you that on the night of Sunday, December 22, Oleksandr Usyk defeated Tyson Fury for the second time and defended his titles. The seventh fight of the Ukrainian in the super-heavyweight division ended with a victory on points 116:112, 116:112, 116:112.
