Never buy them: overpriced cars are named
Choosing a new car is not an easy task, which often leads to excessive spending. There is a risk of buying an overpriced car that will require constant investments and repairs over the course of its use. Some cars don't have enough value to justify their retail prices, even if you take inflation into account.
Regardless of your budget, there are a few models in every segment that don't justify the cost. They lack features, material quality, power, or technology. Others lose out to close competitors that cost less, have better ratings, and have higher overall performance. Experts have published a list of overpriced cars.
Audi Q7 2025
Experts say that this model does not justify the initial price of 60 thousand dollars. Michael Dominguez, a certified master mechanic and automotive technology specialist at the University of Michigan, says this car is at the top of the overpriced list.
"One model that immediately comes to mind is the Audi Q7. Although it boasts luxury, the high cost of maintenance and minimal improvements over last year makes it difficult to justify the increased recommended price," the expert said.
The Audi Q7 is outperformed by competitors such as the BMW X5 and Lexus RX 350, both of which offer similar luxury amenities at a better price.
Cadillac Escalade
The 2024 Cadillac Escalade starts at $81,895, but the new 2025 model can range from $87,595 to $116,395 without a major upgrade.
The Cadillac Escalade has many advantages, but it doesn't necessarily offer more than the 2023 Chevy Tahoe, a much cheaper SUV with a similar engine and features. You're essentially wasting money on the Cadillac name without getting any significant improvements in performance or technology.
Mercedes-Benz C-Class
Liam Lucas, automotive expert and founder of Off-Road Genius, doesn't like the Mercedes-Benz C-Class - simply because of its price.
"Although it is a luxury car with high-quality features, its price has risen significantly, outstripping the improvements," the expert said.
The base model starts at $40,000. With additional features, the price can reach $60,000, which is unreasonably high considering that its competitors, such as the Audi A4 or BMW 3 Series, offer similar or better features for a lower or comparable price.
Range Rover Sport
The cost of a Range Rover Sport ranges from $83,700 to $180,000. This is no ordinary car offering. Although it is a luxury SUV with off-road capabilities, competitors like the Jeep Grand Cherokee offer similar off-road capabilities and luxury at a fraction of the cost. The Grand Cherokee's high-end Summit Reserve package starts at $71,535.
Bronco Raptor
Robert Luterzo, an automotive engineer and editor of Automotive Widget, calls the Bronco Raptor "one of the most expensive 4×4 vehicles on the market this year."
"Its focus on off-roading can lead to compromises when it comes to everyday practicality and comfort," said Luterzo.
The aggressive suspension setup and off-road tires offer a less comfortable driving experience on the road. In addition, the emphasis on off-roading can mean that amenities found in other SUVs are either missing or offered as expensive add-on packages.
Rivian R1T
The Rivian R1T is the most expensive electric vehicle with all-wheel drive. As an electric pickup, the Rivian R1 serves a relatively niche market, at least in the early stages. This limited demand may lead to higher production costs per unit, which can be passed on to the consumer through a higher price.
BMW iX
Nick Robinson, co-founder of Pick and Pull Sell Car, a used car parts marketplace, doesn't believe the BMW iX's technical specs can justify its price, which starts at a high $80,000. He believes that competitors such as the Tesla Model X, Audi e-tron, and Mercedes-Benz EQC offer much more for the same money.
"The iX has a controversial design, a small, mediocre range, and poor performance. Furthermore, it doesn't live up to its premium price or luxury brand name, and it's not worth buying when there are better and cheaper alternatives on the market," Robinson said.
Toyota Sienna
The Toyota Sienna is overpriced. There are few minivan manufacturers, and the Sienna has been one of the most reliable options for years.
But in 2020, Toyota changed the entire Sienna lineup – which starts at $36,885 – to exclusively hybrid models.
"The small engine can help save fuel when the van is empty, but if it is loaded for children's sports or family vacations, drivers will notice an extreme lack of four-cylinder power," said Melanie Musson, an automotive industry expert at AutoInsurance.
