Myth busted: gasoline Hyundai is not more expensive to maintain than Tesla
For a long time, we have been convinced that electric cars, which are more expensive than other cars, allow the owner to save money in the future on cheap operation. Tesla was the driver of this myth, but in fact, gasoline-powered Hyundai and Honda dispelled the misconception.
According to Carscoops, Self experts have calculated the annual operating costs of modern cars. What is included in the cost of ownership? Fuel costs (or charging in the case of EVs), insurance, maintenance, and taxes.
The industry average was determined to be $6,462. The most expensive car in this regard is the Chevrolet Tahoe with $8644. But the most interesting thing is that in practice, electric cars have not demonstrated tangible benefits.
The cost of operating a car per year:
- Tesla Model 3 - $5061;
- Hyundai Elantra - $5104;
- Toyota Corolla - $5182;
- Kia Forte - $5235;
- Honda Civic - $5282;
- Honda Accord - $5380;
- Tesla Model Y - $5393;
- Nissan Altima - $5449;
- Toyota Camry - $5462;
- Honda CR-V - $5485.
Obviously, the top five cars are very close in terms of annual operating costs. The difference of $40-200 can be called an error that completely destroys the myth of the absolute cheapness of operating electric cars.
