Mysterious light pillars spotted in the sky over Canada: what is this unusual optical phenomenon. Photo and video
Eyewitnesses have reported mysterious pillars of light in the sky over the Canadian province of Alberta. These dazzling pillars of light seem to emanate from sources at ground level, reaching upward and creating an otherworldly, mirror-like illusion.
In fact, these beams of light, often interpreted as paranormal phenomena, are an impressive natural optical illusion formed by special winter conditions. According to scientists, the bright pulses occur during extremely low temperatures, NDTV Word reports.
These vertical beams of light are formed when light, usually from artificial sources such as streetlights or lighting from buildings, reflects off hexagonal ice crystals that become like tiny mirrors, scientists explain. When the light reflects off the ice crystals, it creates a dazzling, shimmering column that appears to extend high into the sky, creating a fascinating visual.
This winter phenomenon is known to occur mainly in regions with cold climates, especially where temperatures plummet in winter. A country such as Canada has ideal conditions for this spectacle, where the light columns are often seen on cold nights when there are many ice crystals in the atmosphere, researchers say.
