For those seeking an idyllic vacation and unity with nature, it is important to choose little-known destinations where you are unlikely to encounter crowds of tourists. This year, the United Nations World Tourism Organization held the fourth edition of the Best Tourism Villages 2024.

Out of more than 260 applications, 55 villages were recognized as having the potential to promote tourism in the region. The villages had to meet criteria that include sustainable development, environmental protection, local involvement in promoting the region, etc. So, before the winner of the rating becomes a place of a new influx of travelers, the Mirror advises to visit this picturesque village on the edge of the mountain.

The village of Anogia on the island of Crete, Greece, received the highest award and was recognized as an "outstanding destination" in the category of "Rural Tourism".

Anogia is located on the slopes of Psiloritis (Mount Ida), at an altitude of 700 meters. It has a central square used in the summer months for music and theater performances, as well as many villas, alleys, colorful local houses, and cozy cafes.

The area is also known for its traditional Cretan music, so street concerts are often organized here. Many locals are also engaged in weaving, which reflects the region's heritage. Unique textiles can be purchased here.

The natural beauty of the area offers many opportunities for exploration, including hiking, trekking, caving, and more. Or you can simply enjoy the panoramic view of the island. One of the caves, known as Ideon, is the place where, according to Greek mythology, the god Zeus was raised by the nymphs Adrasteia and Ida.

In addition, Anogia has the Skinakas Observatory, which offers the opportunity to observe the stars and see celestial objects.

The Nida Plateau is another incredible place that offers beautiful views of the entire region. The village also has many cozy places, cafes and taverns where you can enjoy local cuisine.

"Tourism is a vital tool for inclusion, empowering rural communities to protect and value their rich cultural heritage while driving sustainable development," said UN Secretary-General for Tourism Zurab Pololikashvili.

The Best Tourism Villages initiative not only recognizes the remarkable achievements of these villages but also highlights the transformative power of tourism.

By leveraging their unique assets, these communities can foster economic growth, promote local traditions, and enhance the quality of life for their residents.

"We celebrate the villages that have embraced tourism as a pathway to empowerment and community well-being, demonstrating that sustainable practices can lead to a brighter future for all," added Pololikashvili.

The initiative was launched in 2021 to increase the role of tourism in rural areas and preserve landscapes, cultural diversity, local values and culinary traditions.
