List of Ukrainian spices and dishes to add them to
It is common to use a variety of spices for cooking. Such mixes as Provence or Italian herbs are extremely popular.
But what about Ukrainian spices? FoodOboz explains what they are and what dishes they should be added to.
Hemp
This is one of the traditional Ukrainian seasonings. It is used for meat, porridge, salads, borscht, and even baked goods. Hemp seeds are also used to make oil to season dishes and add a characteristic flavor and aroma.
Juniper
This is another spice forgotten in vain. Crushed juniper and black pepper are excellent preservatives that are used to extend the shelf life of food. It is also used to rub meat to be stored in cellars for several years.
Cardamom
It is an ideal spice that goes well with a variety of pastries, meat dishes, and even coffee. The tradition of adding cardamom to coffee came from Poland and is most popular in Western Ukraine.
Saffron
This flavorful seasoning grows in Crimea. In addition to it, whole bunches of other seasonings are harvested there, adding extraordinary flavor and taste to dishes. Saffron is usually used to make bread or meat dishes.
Berry leaves and sprigs
Teas, compotes, liqueurs, and even canned foods are often complemented with sprigs of cherries, raspberries, currants, or other berry plants. Elderberry, sage, lemon balm, tarragon, and even wormwood are also often added to meat dishes.
