Lanzarote or Tenerife: comparing iconic Spanish resorts

Albina PanchenkoNews

One island is a calm volcanic landscape, while the other is a stormy mix of mountains and beaches. Both are part of the Canary Islands, but each with its own unique "character." Today we are going to tell you about the peculiarities of the destinations and what you should see during your trip. Read below to find out where to go.

Lanzarote

Lanzarote is located in the province of Las Palmas in the Atlantic Ocean. In 1993, UNESCO recognized the island as a biosphere reserve. It has a subtropical climate with minimal rainfall. In winter, the air temperature ranges from +17°C to +22°C, in summer - up to +30°C. The coldest month is February.

The main resort is Puerto del Carmen. The nearest international airport is 7 kilometers from the city. The largest and most famous beach is Playa Grande. The coast is famous for its ideal conditions for family vacations. Tourists will find everything they need: from sun loungers and umbrellas to restaurants and shops.

Another location is Playa Blanca. Once a fishing village, it is now the third largest tourist center. Playa Blanca is characterized by white sand and a gentle slope into the water. The coastline stretches for more than 300 meters. There are showers and a ramp for people with disabilities.

What to see there

First, we recommend going to Timanfaya National Park. It is considered one of the most exotic landscapes in Europe. The natural area is characterized by red and black volcanic craters. It is home to more than 200 dormant fire mountains, with landscapes reminiscent of Mars.

Then visit the cactus garden, which is home to about 1,400 species of thorny plants. It was designed by the Spanish artist César Manrique. We also recommend visiting the artist's estate.

Also, go to the village of Punta Mujeres in the municipality of Haría to see aloe plantations. There are also shops where travelers can buy care products.

Tenerife

It is located in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa. It is the largest of the seven islands of the archipelago. The Mediterranean climate prevails here. In winter, the average temperature ranges from +17°C to +20°C, in summer - from +23°C to +26°C. The coldest month is January.

One of the most popular resorts is Playa de Las Americas. The location is famous for its beaches with unusual grey volcanic sand. Playa del Camisón is equipped with breakwaters that ensure the safety of swimming areas. Playa Honda is popular among surfing enthusiasts. Both coasts are free to enter.

There are two coastlines on Los Cristianos: Playa de los Cristianos with the necessary infrastructure and Playa de las Vistas, 850 meters long. In the XVI century, the city was a fishing village. Today, you can take a ferry from here to Gomera, La Palma and Hierro.

What to see there

Start your trip in the Teide National Park. Its area is about 19 hectares. It is home to the volcano of the same name, the third highest in the world (3,715 meters). A cable car was built in 1975. At the top is the La Rambleta observation deck, as well as several hiking trails.

Fans of water activities are advised to visit the Thai-themed Siam Park water park. It has more than 25 slides and various attractions, including Wave Palace, Jungle Snake, Lost City for children, etc.

Also, visit the Loro Parque Zoo, home to parrots, penguins, dolphins, fur seals, gorillas, and sharks.

Lanzarote enchants with a relaxing vacation among unique volcanic landscapes. Tenerife, on the other hand, impresses with its pace and variety of entertainment from water sports to exotic natural parks. It's up to you to choose!
