Kyiv then and now: 10 historical photos that will show the capital of Ukraine a century ago
Kyiv, like any big city, is constantly transforming. The capital of Ukraine has undergone many changes throughout its long history. Not only has its appearance changed, but also the functions it performed.
To imagine what our city was like a century ago, it is worth looking into historical photo archives. The "ShoTam" public has shared photos of how Kyiv has changed over the decades.
Independence Square: from the swamp to the heart of the capital
Today's Independence Square has a rich history. Once upon a time, it was a swamp, and later it was a defense structure. Over the centuries, the square has changed its name and appearance many times. During its existence, the square has undergone several large-scale reconstructions, as well as the erection and demolition of monuments to famous historical figures.
Khreshchatyk: from the first house to the main street of the country
The history of Khreshchatyk as a city street dates back to the late 18th century. It was then that the first building appeared here, which, unfortunately, has not survived to this day. Over the past centuries, Khreshchatyk has become a business card of Kyiv and one of the most famous avenues in Europe.
Other locations: how the city changed
The changes affected not only Maidan and Khreshchatyk. Other central squares of the city have also been significantly transformed. For example, European Square and Shevchenko Park once looked completely different.
And on the site of the modern NSC Olimpiyskiy, there used to be a huge chess field where people played as pieces.
Podil: the historic center of Kyiv
Podil, one of Kyiv's oldest neighborhoods, has also undergone significant changes. It used to be a distinctive shopping center with narrow streets and old buildings. Today, Podil is a popular place for walking and recreation.
