Kostiuk wins a match with a comeback at the start of the Australian Open-2025, breaking a terrible streak
Ukraine's best tennis player Marta Kostiuk has made a winning start at the season's first Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open 2025. Our compatriot had a hard time defeating Japan's Nao Hibino in three sets – 3:6, 6:3, 6:1.
The match lasted 1 hour and 45 minutes. During this time, the Ukrainian served six times, realized all five breakpoints, and won 30 active games. Kostiuk had 11 double faults and 41 unforced errors in her passing game.
This victory was Marta's first in 2025. Prior to that, she suffered two consecutive defeats at tournaments in Brisbane and Adelaide, as well as in the 1/8 finals in Wuhan last November. In the second round of the Australian Open, the 22-year-old from Kyiv will compete against the 92nd ranked Julie Niemayer.
Another of our compatriots, Elina Svitolina, confidently defeated Sorana Cirstea, the first racket of Romania, 6-4, 6-4, at the start of the Melbourne super tournament. It was the first match for the Odesa-based player since last September. The Ukrainian will play Caroline Dolehide of the United States, ranked 82nd in the world rankings, to reach the third round.
