It's official. Russia has been "canceled" at the World Ice Hockey Championship
Fans at the 2024 IIHF World Championship are banned from bringing flags and any attributes of Russia and Belarus to the matches, the press service of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) said in a commentary. The tournament will be held in the Czech cities of Prague and Ostrava from May 10 to 26.
"During the tournament, national flags of only the countries participating in the championship will be allowed at the matches," the IIHF informs.
This became known after the International Ice Hockey Federation suspended Belarus and Russia from the 2024/2025 season, according to the organization's official website. This means that both national teams will miss the World Championships in May, and the team from Belarus will miss the Olympic qualifiers.
In the spring of 2022, the IIHF Council suspended the national teams of Russia and Belarus from international competitions indefinitely due to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. In February 2024, the organization extended the sanctions for the 2024/25 season.
After that, two-time Olympic champion Vyacheslav Fetisov attacked the IIHF leaders and its president Luc Tardif with insults.
