Italy has banned tourists from checking into rented apartments on their own. From now on, guests for short-term rentals must be met personally by property owners or managers.

This innovation came into force after the signing of a government decree on November 18. The main reason is to increase security measures and maintain public order, especially on the eve of important events such as the 2025 Jubilee in Rome, Euronews reports.

The Italian government explains that automated check-in systems pose a risk to society. The use of key boxes or combination locks makes it impossible to identify guests, which can contribute to the spread of crime or terrorism. Of particular concern is the fact that persons checking in in this way may remain unknown to law enforcement.

Local authorities have launched an active information campaign among property owners and rental platforms such as Airbnb and Booking. Currently, all short-term landlords are required to personally meet guests, check their documents, and register them with the police within 24 hours.

The decision has received positive feedback from local authorities. In particular, Rome Mayor Roberto Gaulieri called it "good news" and supported the fight against uncontrolled placement of rental apartments. He also announced his intention to dismantle all existing key boxes in the city.

Residents of large cities such as Rome and Milan have long opposed the uncontrolled growth of short-term rentals. They were outraged by the noise, rising housing prices, and a decline in quality of life due to the influx of tourists. At the beginning of the year, protesters even damaged key boxes on the streets.

Italian media emphasize that the main purpose of this decision is to ensure public safety during the numerous events that will take place in the coming years. Particular emphasis is placed on preventing crime and terrorist threats.

For travelers, this means that they need to make appointments with homeowners in advance. Self-check-ins through combination locks or lockboxes are now prohibited, which may affect the comfort of tourists, but will also help to enhance security.

The Italian government expects that the innovation will improve control over short-term rentals and increase the level of protection for both local residents and tourists.
