ICC judge arrested in absentia in Moscow for issuing arrest warrant for Shoigu and Gerasimov

The aggressor country of Russia has arrested in absentia a judge of the International Criminal Court in The Hague (ICC), Haykel Ben Mahfoudh. The Russians were outraged by the fact that the Tunisian lawyer had previously issued arrest warrants for former Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov.

The decision was made by the Basmanny District Court of Moscow. This was reported on November 11 by the Russian online media outlet Mediaphone.

As a reminder, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Shoigu and Gerasimov in the summer of 2024. Both of these generals of the Russian army were charged with striking civilian objects and civilians in Ukraine.

In Moscow, a criminal case was opened against Haykel Ben Mahfoudh for the alleged illegal detention of Shoigu and Gerasimov. He is charged with Part 2 of Article 301 of the aggressor country's criminal code. Russian propagandists emphasize that the maximum punishment under this article is "four years in prison."

It is noted that the Tunisian lawyer, who became an ICC judge in March 2024, issued the warrant together with his colleagues Rosario Salvatore Aitala and Sergio Gerardo Ugalde Godinez.

Earlier, Russian security forces opened similar criminal cases against other ICC judges who had issued arrest warrants for dictator Putin and Russian Human Rights Commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova.
