Canning is an integral part of the lives of many households. And one of the most important stages of this process is sterilization of jars.

Jars that have been properly treated can become a reliable place to store various items or homemade preparations. House Digest has explained how to sterilize them quickly and easily.

Recently, an ingenious life hack on how to sterilize canning jars in the oven has appeared online. It can save a lot of time and minimizes the risk that the food inside will spoil due to bacteria.

In addition, sterilized jars can be used not only for food, but also for storing various small items in your home that should be protected from moisture, insects, mold, etc.

How to sterilize jars in the oven

Before you start sterilizing, it's important to keep a few things in mind. Although glass jars may seem sturdy, they can be vulnerable to thermal shock. If the temperature is changed abruptly, the jars can crack or even explode. To avoid such situations, follow the instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to a temperature of no more than 130 degrees. Higher temperatures can cause damage to the glass;
  2. Before putting the jars in the oven, wash them in hot water and detergent. You can leave them damp afterwards;
  3. Remove the rubber seals and lids from the jars to prevent them from melting;
  4. Place a towel or newspaper on the baking sheet before placing the jars on it;
  5. Put the baking sheet with the jars in a warm (not hot) oven and leave for 10-20 minutes;
  6. After sterilization, let the jars cool down on their own. This will help avoid a sudden temperature drop that can lead to cracks.

What you need to know about safety during sterilization

Some experts in the United States and Canada do not recommend sterilizing food storage jars in the oven. This is due to possible risks, such as insufficient temperature stability, which may not kill all germs. Therefore, they advise choosing other sterilization methods for food, such as boiling.

However, if you want to use jars to store a variety of items - from home cosmetics to needlework materials - the oven sterilization method will be a great option.
