How to prepare your cat for a visit to the vet: a few techniques

A veterinarian has shared six exercises to do with your cat that should prepare your pet for a trip to the doctor.

An expert named B, known online as Drink Coffe Save Animals, took to TikTok to share the poses she encourages cat owners to teach their furry friends before going to the vet. The woman demonstrated the necessary poses on her cat Nix.    

First, the doctor showed how to hold the cat with both hands, scratching its head with one hand and raising its front paw with the other. This allows the vets to reach the main vein in the cat's arm.

The vet then laid Nix on the table and pressed his hind legs with one hand while touching his tummy and holding his front paws with the other hand and stroking with her thumb.

This is another common procedure that requires the cat's neck to be stable. To help owners prepare their feline friends, the doctor recommends standing behind their sitting cat and holding its head at a slightly elevated angle with both hands, and stroking them to calm it down.

Next, she pinches and lifts Nix's fur along his spine before stroking him again in a soothing manner. This won't hurt the cat and is good preparation for any injections that may be needed.

The veterinarian also advised touching the cat's paws and nails as often as possible so that it won't be afraid of claw trimming later.

Finally, she explained how to prepare your cat to hold a towel, which is used for everything from blood draws to X-ray restraints. To do this, she wrapped a towel around Nix's neck and held it for a short time.

The doctor emphasized that the more you train with your cat, the calmer and more productive your visit to the vet will be next time.
