How to keep your cat warm in winter: top 5 expert tips
Cats are generally considered to be very self-sufficient, and many of them enjoy going outside and wandering around your place of residence. But as it turns out, their fur alone is not enough to keep them warm during the cold season.
Cat expert Katie Gwilt is concerned that many pet owners simply don't know that cats can actually suffer from the cold, and has given guidelines to help owners cope with their pets' needs when the weather starts to get worse, the Express writes.
Conventional or electric blankets
First, make sure that your furry pet has minimal protection from the cold - lay down a regular blanket to keep it comfortable. You can also use an electric one. If the cat is completely cold, you can cover it up.
Outdoor shelters
Many cats still enjoy going outside, despite the drop in temperature. You may also have local stray and feral cats that you help care for. Outdoor shelters are now commonplace and there are many types to choose from. There are wooden and plastic ones, or you can make something yourself.
Beds with radiators
This is a great addition if your cats like to curl up next to radiators.
Check the top of the radiator, as there are different options available. If your cat prefers floor level, you can try a clothes rack with a blanket over it.
Closed beds
Any bed that your cat has the ability to climb on (health permitting) is a great way to help keep them warm. This way they have warmth on three sides plus the top and bottom.
Beds like igloos are a great choice. You can also use a blanket or cloth thrown over a table for your cat to nap under
Adjust the temperature
You can even make your own cat bed out of a cardboard box and an old t-shirt. The possibilities are endless if you use your imagination.
It's important to give your cat a choice and allow her to regulate the temperature on her own, so make sure she can move away from any heat source if necessary.
