How to keep your battery alive in winter: expert advice
In winter, car batteries are subjected to increased stress not only due to increased energy consumption but also due to low temperatures. In cold weather, the rate of chemical reaction decreases, which can lead to a decrease in performance, especially in older batteries. What you need to pay attention to and how to take care of your car's battery so that you don't have to buy a new one or get stuck somewhere on the highway.
Simple recommendations have been prepared by Bosch experts.
How to properly "light up" a car?
If the battery is dead, you can start the engine from an external source. It is important to follow the correct sequence when performing this operation.
- You can only use another battery if the rated voltage of both batteries is the same.
- The auxiliary vehicle and the vehicle that has been switched off must not come into contact, otherwise there is a risk of a short circuit.
- The engine and all power consumption sources must be switched off in both vehicles.
- First, the red cable clamp is attached to the positive terminal of the auxiliary vehicle. The other end of the red cable is attached to the positive terminal of the quiescent car.
- Then, the black clamp is attached to the negative terminal of the auxiliary vehicle and the other end of the black cable is attached to an unpainted metal contact away from the battery of the stalled vehicle, such as the engine block.
- Start the engine of the auxiliary vehicle first, then the stalled one. Remove the clamps in the reverse order.
How to charge the battery correctly?
The battery should be charged before and after a long period of inactivity.
- To connect the charger to the battery, connect its cables directly to the battery terminals.
- You can then connect the charger to the mains.
- When charging is complete, first unplug the charger from the mains before disconnecting the cables from the battery.
How do I choose the right battery?
When replacing a battery that has reached the end of its life, it is important to purchase a power source that meets the requirements of the automaker and the operating conditions. The optimal battery model is the one that can meet all the needs of electrical equipment.
8 ways to extend battery life:
- Regularly check the battery voltage, charge level, and starting power, as well as the energy loss in the vehicle.
- Disconnect the battery before winterizing the vehicle. Tip: Store the battery in a cool place.
- Have the battery inspected at least twice a year or once a month in winter (in cold weather) if the battery is old.
- Make sure that the battery is securely fastened in the battery compartment, that its metal parts are lubricated, and that the contacts are tight.
- If possible, avoid discharging the battery completely.
- Depress the clutch pedal when starting the engine to reduce starter resistance and thus energy consumption.
- Before starting the engine, switch off all optional equipment, such as the radio, air conditioning, or additional heating.
- After a long period of inactivity, recharge the battery with an electronically controlled charger.
