How to keep cool at night without air conditioning: effective tips
The ideal temperature for sleeping is around 18 degrees. Therefore, in summer, when the temperature can rise higher even at night, the heat becomes a real challenge.
The lack of air conditioning or electricity does not mean that a comfortable sleep is impossible. There are many effective ways to keep cool, as Cnet has described.
Freeze sheets and pillowcases
Put your sheets and pillowcases in the freezer an hour or two before bedtime. They won't get stiff, but they'll stay cool long enough for you to fall asleep in comfort.
Socks
Just like bedding, you can freeze socks. Feet play a role in temperature regulation. By keeping them cold, you can cool down the rest of your body.
Fan
Fans are much more budget-friendly and energy-efficient than air conditioners.
Place a fan near your bed and have a bowl of ice water in front of it. The ice will cool the air, and the fan will distribute it throughout the room. Then place the device near the window so that it pushes the heat out of the bedroom.
Wet towel
Place a damp, cold towel on top of your bed to cool your body a bit. This will be enough to help you get a good night's sleep.
Don't sleep naked
It seems logical to sleep without clothes on to keep you cooler. But this will only work if the room is cold enough because if you sweat, you won't be comfortable at all. In the heat, it's better to wear lightweight pajamas made of natural fabrics to wick away moisture.
Cooling bedding
You can buy cooling sheets, blankets, or pillows made of breathable fabrics such as linen or bamboo.
Cooling mattress
Some mattresses provide additional airflow and help to dissipate heat. This makes it much more comfortable to sleep in the summer.
Close the curtains
Prevent your bedroom from overheating during the day by using blackout curtains. They prevent the sun's rays from entering the room and heating it up.
Sleep on the ground floor of the house
Hot air tends to rise upward, so if you live in a two-story house, go to bed downstairs.
Prepare for sleep
Drink plenty of water before bed and avoid alcohol, as it contributes to dehydration, making it difficult to regulate your body temperature.
