Hasn't lost in 6 years: a grand sensation at the Australian Open-2024
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic has failed in the semifinal match of the season's first Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open 2024. The Serbian tennis player, who last lost in Melbourne six years ago, lost to Italian Yannick Sinner.
The opponents spent 202 minutes on the court, and the Italian was stronger in four games - 6:1, 6:2, 6:7, 6:3. During this time, Sinner served nine times, won 31 active games, and converted five out of 11 break points. Yannick had one double fault and 28 unforced errors.
The Serb made 54 (!) unforced errors in the match, and never claimed a point on his opponent's serve. This defeat was Djokovic's first at the Australian Open 2024 in 2195 days. The last time he lost on the courts of Melbourne was at the 2018 tournament, when he sensationally lost to South Korean Jong-hyun in the fourth round.
For Novak, the Australian Open is his favorite. He has won it 10 times. For the first time in his career, Sinner will play in the final of a Grand Slam. His opponent will be determined in the battle between Russian Daniil Medvedev and German Alexander Zverev.
