Artificial intelligence, which OpenAI is working on, may have reached the point where it is now finally capable of posing a threat to humanity. Scientists are probably fully convinced that it has reached the level of human thinking.

A number of specialized Western media outlets have written about this. According to them, it was this breakthrough and the availability of such AI for commercialization that led to Sam Altman's hasty dismissal.

As it became known, a few days before Altman's dismissal, the company's board received a letter from several OpenAI employees expressing concern about the team's technical breakthrough in the field of artificial intelligence. They said that AI could now threaten humanity.

According to The Information's sources, this development, headed by OpenAI's chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, potentially allows for the creation of much more powerful AI models.

The letter pointed to insufficient guarantees for the safe commercialization of such advanced AI models.

Meanwhile, Reuters sources said that this secret breakthrough is called Q* (pronounced Q-Star).

It is an AI model that can use large computing resources and solve specific mathematical problems. This is a significant step for OpenAI as AI's math skills are currently at the elementary school level.

As Interesting Engineering notes, Altman himself also hinted that his team has made some significant progress.

"Personally, I will say that there were four times in the history of OpenAI, the last time was literally in the last couple of weeks. I've been in the room when we've pulled back the curtain of ignorance and opened up new horizons," he said during a speech at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.

Only a day later, he was fired by the OpenAI board.

However, when 700 employees threatened to follow Altman's lead and join him at Microsoft, the board backtracked. Only 5 days after his dismissal, Altman returned to his position.

Scientists believe that the mathematical achievements of AI are a step towards the emergence of generative AI. The reason is that mathematics involves a level of reasoning similar to the human mind. Now, AI looks like a master of words, but not an intellectual.

Scientists assume that AI with human intelligence can get out of control and decide that the death of humanity can be the answer to all problems.
