Gladiator 2 will be released soon: what is known about the sequel to the legendary movie

The first installment of Gladiator was released in 2000 and became a cult film, winning five Oscars and being included in the list of the 250 best films according to IMDb. The prototype of the main character is considered to be Marcus Nonius Macrinus, one of the closest friends of Emperor Marcus Aurelius.

We had to wait 24 years for the second part. Recently, the pre-premiere screening of Gladiator 2 took place, and the Hollywood Reporter told what to expect from the sequel to the cult story.

Gladiator is an American-British historical drama action movie. The first part was directed by Ridley Scott and written by David Franzoni, John Logan and William Nicholson. The main roles in the 2000 film adaptation were played by Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen, Ralph Meller, Oliver Reed, Djimon González, Derek Jacobi and Richard Harris.

Crowe stars as the Spanish-Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius, who is betrayed when Commodus, the ambitious son of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, kills his father and seizes the throne. Maximus becomes a slave, but rises in his career through the gladiatorial arena. Above all, he seeks revenge for the murder of his family and his emperor.

Recently, the first screening of Gladiator II took place, and the first reactions have already hit social media.

The sequel to the 2000 film was screened at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles, where the media and film critics first saw the film starring Denzel Washington, Paul Mescal and Pedro Pascal.

The second part was also directed by Ridley Scott. Paul Mescal played the role of the adult Lucius Vera II, the nephew of Emperor Commodus from the original film, played by Joaquin Phoenix. Lucius returns to Rome after being forced into slavery to fight not as a ruler, but as a gladiator who seeks revenge and power, and wishes to restore the glory of Rome to his people.

The cast also includes Connie Nielsen, Joseph Quinn, Derek Jacobi, Rory McCann, Fred Hechinger, Matt Lucas, Mae Kalamavi, Tim McInerney, Peter Mensa and Alec Uthof.

The film will be officially released in theaters on November 22.

Gladiator 2 was produced by Paramount Pictures. The original film was released more than two decades ago, won five Oscars and earned $465.4 million at the global box office. The first trailer, released in July, also garnered 215 million views worldwide in just a few days.
