For the second time in history: UEFA includes two Ukrainians in the list of Euro referees

The European Football Union (UEFA) has included two Ukrainian referees in the list of referees who will be able to work in the final part of the 2024 UEFA European Championship. Mykola Balakin, 35, from Kyiv, and Oleksandr Berkut, 32, from Sumy, were included in the reserve list.

This is stated on the official UEFA website. At the European Championship matches, the Ukrainians will compete for the role of the fourth referee or reserve assistant referee at the matches. This is the second time in history that our compatriots have been included in the list of Euro referees. In 2012, Viktor Shvetsov and Oleksandr Voitiuk given such honor.

UEFA has selected a total of 18 head referees for the championship in Germany. Two referees each represent Italy, England, France and Germany.

It should be noted that this season Balakin and Berkut became the first Ukrainians to be appointed to a Champions League group stage match in 25 years. They worked at the Real Sociedad vs Salzburg match (0:0). Then they became the first ever representatives of our country in the playoffs of the Conference League.
