For the first time in world history: European Biathlon Championships marked with incredible sensation
Mongolian biathlete Enkhbat Enkhsaikhan has won gold at the European Junior Championships in Jakuszyce, Poland. The 21-year-old native of Ulaanbaatar won a sensational victory in the individual race.
Enkhsaikhan was one of three biathletes to shoot perfectly, with no misses at all four firing lines. Despite starting 72nd, Enkhbat managed to beat Kalle Loukkaanhuhta of Finland by 1.6 seconds. Jakob Kulbin of Finland came in third.
This medal was the first ever biathlon award for Mongolia. The country has never reached the podium in an international biathlon tournament before.
The head coach of the Mongolian biathlon team is Alexander Popov, who once played for the U.S.S.R. and Belarus. The 58-year-old from Tobolsk (Tyumen Oblast) won the 1988 Calgary Olympics as part of the relay team. He is also a four-time world champion.
Ukrainian Vitalii Mandzin took fourth place in this race. Our compatriot missed the podium by 6.4 seconds.
In total, six representatives of Ukraine participated in the individual competition.
