Seattle Kraken assistant coach Jessica Campbell coached her first regular season game in her new position, becoming the first female coach in the NHL. Campbell, 32, joined the Kraken coaching staff in July 2024.

The video of her work made a splash online. In less than a day, the video, in which Jessica stands behind the hockey players and watches what is happening on the ice, was viewed by about 8 million people.

Seattle lost its opening match of the 2024/2025 regular season to the St. Louis Blues with a score of 2-3.

In the comments, Seattle hockey fans had mixed reactions to the new coach. Some believe that the main thing is results and that a coach can be of any gender. Others assume that she will be uncomfortable managing the players, especially when they are in the locker room without clothes after the match.

Previously, the 32-year-old Canadian worked two seasons in the AHL as an assistant to Coachella Valley Firebirds head coach Dan Bylsma, who is now the head of Seattle.

In 2022, Campbell worked on the coaching staff of the German national team at the Men's World Cup of Hockey.

Campbell began her career as a player. In 2010, at the World Junior Hockey Championships, she helped Canada to victory in the tournament final, scoring the winning goal in overtime against the U.S. team, and the match ended 5-4 in favor of the Maple Leafs. She earned 15 points in that tournament, becoming the top scorer among hockey players and was recognized as the tournament MVP.

Jessica played for four seasons for the Cornell Big Red, a team representing Cornell University; in the 2013/14 season, she earned 36 points (14+22). In 2014, Campbell became a player of the Calgary Inferno, a team representing the Canadian Women's Hockey League.

As a member of the Canadian national team, she became a silver medalist at the 2015 World Championship, where she played 5 games but did not earn a single point.
