Greece beat England for the first time
For the first time in its history, the Greek national football team defeated England, creating a huge sensation in the third round of the Nations League. Coach Ivan Jovanovic's men shocked the finalists of the 2024 European Championship in London at the legendary Wembley Stadium, winning 2-1.
The Greeks came to the game wearing mourning armbands, as the day before the game it became known that the team's football player George Baldock had died. This news rallied the Greek team and they gave an incredible performance in the capital of Great Britain.
Vangelis Pavlidis, a forward for Benfica Lisbon, became the hero of the match. The partner of Ukrainian Anatolii Trubin managed to make a double. The forward opened the scoring at the very beginning of the second half when he twisted the defenders and scored past English goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
The home side pounced on the opposition defense but only managed to equalize in the 87th minute with a stunning effort from the penalty spot by Jude Bellingham.
But the Greeks managed to snatch the victory. In the last added minute, Pavlidis took advantage of the commotion at Pickford's goal and shocked the crowd with a five-meter shot. Thus, for the first time in 10 matches, the Hellenes managed to prevail in the confrontation with the English.
