For the first time in history, the Canadian national team lost to Latvia at the World Ice Hockey Championship among youth teams, which is taking place in Ottawa, Canada, from December 26 to January 5. The match ended in a series of post-match shootouts with a score of 3:2.

The Canadian team took the lead twice, but Latvia came back each time. The most dramatic moment occurred at the end of the third period. Two minutes before the siren, in a five-on-four situation, Latvian captain Peter Bulans managed to equalize the score.

The Latvians won in the eighth round of the shootout, where Erik Matejko scored his second attempt. Latvia's goalkeeper Linārds Feldbergs saved 55 shots out of 57 and never missed a shot in the series.

After the victory, 19-year-old Bulans could not contain his emotions, saying that "it's unreal"

"I just don't have the words to describe it. Someone pinch me, it doesn't seem real," said the Latvian defenseman.

In another game of the day, Sweden confidently beat Kazakhstan (8:1). Canada is leading Group A with 4 points. Latvia started the tournament with a victory and is 4th in the table with a game in hand.
