For the first time in eight years: the most exciting event in football took place in the Champions League
London-based Arsenal has become another quarterfinalist in the Champions League. The English club joined its compatriots from Manchester City, as well as Spanish Real Madrid and Barcelona, German Bayern Munich and French PSG. Two more participants in the second stage of the playoffs will be determined on March 13.
The Gunners achieved this success by winning a duel with Portuguese side Porto. Moreover, the English managed to get past the Dragons only in a penalty shootout, which has not been in the tournament since 2016 and is considered the most nerve-wracking part of any match.
After a 0-1 defeat on the opponent's field, Mikel Arteta's team had to win at home. The home side had the advantage, which they converted into a goal in the 41st minute - Belgian winger Leandro Trossard, having received a brilliant pass from Arsenal captain Martin Edegor, hit the far corner of the Porto goal.
The Londoners continued to try to decide the outcome of the duel in regular time. They even managed to score the second, but French referee Clement Turpin saw a violation in the attack against the Portuguese goalkeeper and canceled it.
The game went to overtime, during which Ukrainian Oleksandr Zinchenko appeared on the field, and then it went to penalty kicks. Here, the Gunners were more accurate, realizing all four of their shots against two hits from the opponents.
Thus, Arsenal made it to the quarterfinals of the Champions League for the first time since the 2009/10 season. It should be noted that the last time the players played a penalty shootout in the tournament was in the 2016 final, when Real Madrid defeated their neighbors Atletico Madrid in Milan.
As OBOZ.UA previously reported, the Saudi football club Al Hilal from Riyadh, after its success in the Asian Champions League, set a new world record for the number of consecutive victories.
