Flower Full Moon will rise over the Earth: when and what is it?

The origin of the name

The names of full moons come from the United States of America. It is believed that they were invented by local farmers, whose traditions were mixed with indigenous beliefs and those brought from various places in Europe.

In May, a large number of flowers appear all over North America, so some Native American tribes gave May the full name "Flower". At the same time, some Native Americans called it the "Blossoming Moon", "Leafy Moon" or even "Sowing Moon".

And Europeans often call the full moon in May "Mother", "Hare" or "Bright". Also in ancient England, one could find the variant "Milk Moon".

When you can see the Flower Full Moon

In 2024, the maximum lunar phase will occur on May 23, at 9:53 a.m. EDT and 4:53 p.m. Kyiv time.

At this point, the Sun will still be above the horizon and the Moon behind it, so it will be visible at approximately 21:19 in the southeast. The Earth's satellite will be located in the constellation Scorpius next to its brightest star, Antares.

This is the fifth full moon of the year. Its peculiarity will be that the Moon will not rise too high above the horizon and will disappear at 5 am on May 24. But according to NASA, the satellite will look full from about Tuesday to early Friday evening, so you can enjoy it a little earlier or later.
