Exploring the country with the longest coastline: what sights not to miss in Norway

Albina PanchenkoNews

No matter how much tourists travel, they are often attracted to natural wonders that can stun and awaken various emotions. And this is something that will never lose its popularity. Majestic fjords, mountain peaks, waterfalls, and cliffs are the so-called places of freedom and endurance. Today, we are talking about locations where, although no heat throughout the year, there is still something to see. To know where to go, read below.

Akershus Fortress

Located in the Oslofjorden Bay in Oslo, its construction began in the XIII century by order of King Håkon V Magnusson.

The first attempt to storm the building took place in 1308 under the leadership of Erik Magnusson, the future ruler of Sweden. However, Norwegian troops defended the fortress and won the battle. In 1527, the attraction suffered from a fire caused by a lightning strike.

In the 1590s, Flemish architect Hans van Steenwinckel transformed the medieval citadel into a Renaissance building.

Today it houses the headquarters of the Norwegian Armed Forces and the Ministry of Defense. Tourists can also visit the Norway Resistance Museum and the Akershus Fortress Museum.

Vigeland Sculpture Park

It is located in the Frogner district, not far from the capital. The place is considered to be the most popular one in the country. It covers more than 30 hectares of land.

It houses exhibits by the sculptor Gustav Vigeland from 1907 to 1942.

All the figures represent the states in which a person is in: running, dancing, walking, kissing, sadness, struggle, etc. Currently, the park has about 227 sculptural groups.

Troll's Tongue (Trolltunga)

It is located on the Skjeggedal mountain near the town of Odda at an altitude of over 700 meters above sea level.

The stone ledge was formed from a chipped off part of a rock. In 2009, the natural attraction became a real tourist sensation thanks to its publication on the cover of a popular travel magazine. This led to a rapid increase in the number of tourists.

In 2010, the funicular, which made it easier to get to the top, stopped working. Today, daredevils have to walk a long way - almost 12 kilometers in both directions.

Keep in mind that the best time to travel is from June to October, when there is no snow.

By the way, in 2024, the famous Norwegian DJ and music producer Kygo shot a music video here. For this purpose, a grand piano was lowered from a helicopter onto the rock.

Seven Sisters Waterfall

The waterfall is located in the Møre og Romsdal county in the southwestern part of the country. The waterfall consists of seven streams. Its height is about 410 meters.

There is a legend about a Viking who came to woo seven sisters. He was so impressed by their beauty that he froze in place because he did not know which one to choose. After a long wait, the women turned into waterfalls.

You can see this work of nature on a boat trip.

Kon-Tiki Museum

Located on the Bygdøy Peninsula in Oslo. It is dedicated to the travels of the scientist Thor Heyerdahl.

The raft made of balsa logs, on which he traveled in 1947, is kept here. There are also other vessels: Ra, Ra II, Fatu Hiwa, etc.

There is also a souvenir shop.

Bryggen Harbor

Located in the center of Bergen. The main decoration of the waterfront is 60 colored houses. The entire quarter is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Travelers can visit souvenir shops and local restaurants and cafes.

By the way, they serve a lot of fish dishes: marble shrimp, purple octopus, pretzels stuffed with jellyfish, and even whale meat. We also recommend trying the chocolate-covered waffles kvikk lunsj and the hot drink glögg.

Troll Staircase

Located in the Vestland region in the northern part of western Norway.

The road was opened in 1936 during the reign of King Haakon VII. During the ascent, the path has 11 sharp turns. Approximately in the middle of the route is a bridge over the Stigfossen waterfall.

At an altitude of 858 meters above sea level, there is a parking lot and numerous souvenir shops. There is also an observation deck from where you can admire the waterfall and the Troll Staircase.

Traveling to Norway is an investment in an unforgettable experience that will stay with you for life.
