July is the height of the gardening season. And there are many things to do in the vegetable garden, in the orchard, and the flower garden.

The calendar of works for the month will help you not to miss something important. OBOZ.UA tells about it in more detail.

Vegetable garden

July is usually a very hot and dry month. Therefore, due to the lack of precipitation, you need to water the beds frequently. If you let the soil dry out, vegetables will become more vulnerable to pests. But if you overdo it, there is a risk of fungal infections. Therefore, along with watering, it is necessary to regularly inspect the plants for signs of damage and take timely measures to treat them.

In the middle of summer, potatoes should be treated for the Colorado potato beetle, cabbage for butterfly pests, and cucumbers should be protected from spider mites. If no pests appear, you can spray the plants with preventive doses of protective substances.

In addition, you can sow herbs and leafy vegetables in July to get late harvests. You can also plant root vegetables such as radishes or potatoes. Then you will have young vegetables by the end of summer.

In those beds where the harvest has already been harvested, you can sow green manure – mustard, phacelia, rape, etc. These plants will restore soil fertility and enrich it with the necessary nutrients. The main thing is to cut them before flowering so that they don't have time to produce seeds and spread across the garden.

Orchard

Midsummer is the time when early varieties of various fruits are ripe. This means that they are full of juice and become heavy. Therefore, it is important to check the garden and prop up branches that have produced too much fruit so that they do not break.

Pests and birds also start to flock to the crop. So it's time to take care of installing hunting belts and protective nets. You need to check the contents of the hunting belts every day because insects are extremely active in July. You can also treat the garden with insecticides. But it is important to take into account the recommendations – which of them can be used during the ripening of the fruit harvest.

Some fruit trees may need additional fertilization in July. Here's how you can tell:

  • apple trees – if the fruits are developing slowly, dilute 25-30 g of potassium sulfate in a bucket of water and sprinkle the crowns with this mixture;
  • pears – you can treat the tree crown with a solution of 20-30 g of potassium sulfate per bucket of water;
  • apricots, peaches, nectarines – to spray these tree species, you need 50 g of potassium sulfate per bucket of water.

The treatment should be carried out on a moderately warm day (up to 27 degrees). The weather should be cloudy. The bright sun will dry the solution too quickly.

Flower garden

July is the perfect time to plant biennial flower crops. Turkish carnation, mallow, forget-me-nots, daisies, and pansies will take root well. They are sown from seeds. Before the onset of cold weather, they should be well-rooted for wintering.

Bulbous flowers are cared for depending on what will be done with them next. If you dig up the bulbs, it is important to do so before mid-July. But make sure that the leaves of the plants are dead and dry. If you leave them in the ground, stop watering them, as this can cause the bulbs to rot.

A rose garden requires special care. Faded buds are cut off with sharp secateurs, and bushes and vines are inspected for signs of disease and pests. If you see a white or red bloom on the leaves and trunks, black oily spots, it is a sign that the rose has been attacked by a fungus. Treatment should be started immediately.

The berry garden

July is the month when raspberries, blackberries, currants, and gooseberries ripen. After harvesting, make sure all the bushes are healthy and treat those that need treatment.

Strawberries and strawberries are completely gone by this time, and it's time for maintenance and fertilization. Remove damaged and diseased leaves, and cut off overgrown whiskers. Plants that are 3-4 years old should be completely mowed down. But pruning should be done the day after abundant watering – the soil in the garden should be moist. It is better to burn everything cut. In 7-10 days, strawberries and strawberries are treated with complex fertilizer.
