Director Chris Columbus unfolds the greatest mystery behind first Home Alone movie that tormented fans for 35 years
Chris Columbus, the director of the cult films Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, has revealed the greatest "secret" that has haunted fans of the legendary Christmas movies. The first film about the little Kevin was released in 1990, and since then, viewers have been wondering what the boy's parents actually did for a living.
It is just that the McCallister family had a large estate, expensive Christmas tree decorations and décor, and an opportunity go to Paris in a large group of people. As Columbus shared in the new issue of The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter, he and screenwriter John Hughes discussed the controversial issue during the filming.
As it turned out, Kevin's mother, Kate McCallister (Catherine O'Hara), "was a very successful fashion designer," as evidenced by the mannequins in the basement of the house. As for the head of the family, Peter McCallister (John Heard), the director cannot say for sure. "The father could have, based on John Hughes own experience, worked in advertising, but I don’t remember what the father did," the filmmaker admitted.
However, he definitely denied one of the professions that netizens assumed. According to moviegoers, that's what might have attracted criminals Harry (Joe Pesci) and Marv (Daniel Stern) to the McCallister home, "Not organized crime — even though there was, at the time, a lot of organized crime in Chicago."
