Derussification continues: Kyiv plans to dismantle the monument to Zheglov and Sharapov
The Kyiv City Council plans to dismantle several monuments and other objects in the capital as part of the de-Russification and decommunization process. In particular, this applies to the monument dedicated to the heroes of the Soviet film "The Place of Meeting Cannot Be Changed" – Hlib Zheglov and Volodymyr Sharapov.
This is stated on the Kyiv City Council website in the list of draft decisions. In total, the list includes more than 60 objects.
As noted in the published document, the deputies are proposed to approve changes to the List of memorial sites related to the history and culture of Russia and the USSR, which are to be removed from the public space of Kyiv.
"Due to the numerous war crimes committed by the Russian military during the current stage of the Russian-Ukrainian war, the perception of monuments and place names related to Russian history and culture has rightly become more acute in Ukrainian society. In Ukraine, the debate about whether such objects belong in the national cultural space has intensified significantly," the authors of the project emphasized.
It is worth adding that among the monuments and other objects that are proposed to be dismantled is a monument dedicated to the heroes of the Soviet film "The Meeting Place Cannot Be Changed," Hlib Zheglov and Volodya Sharapov. It is located in the center of the capital near the building of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The monument to Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin on Yuri Paskhalin Street and others are proposed to be added to the same list. In addition, to preserve some monuments but remove elements of Soviet propaganda, it is planned to replace references to the "Great Patriotic War" with "World War II".
