Christmas and New Year 2024 fall on Monday: will these days be days off?
Martial law is still in effect in Ukraine and is likely to be extended over the Christmas holidays. Given that both Christmas and New Year's Day fall on Monday this year, Ukrainians are concerned about whether these days will be days off.
OBOZ.UA analyzed the nuances of the legislation. And tells you what options there are for Ukrainian employees.
What does martial law provide for?
In peacetime, public holidays that fall on working days are declared days off. And if they are celebrated on a weekend, the free day is transferred to the next working day. The martial law rules cancel this. For the entire period that it is officially in effect in Ukraine, all working days, regardless of the date, remain working days and there are no postponements.
The other day, MP Yaroslav Zhelezniak said that the Verkhovna Rada is going to vote for another extension of martial law at one of its meetings this week. It will be the ninth time, and it will fix a special provision for the period until mid-February 2024.
How it will affect the holiday season
Unless any additional decisions are made, this will mean that Christmas, which is now celebrated on December 25, and New Year's Day on January 1 will be working days. After all, both of these dates fall on Monday.
This condition is mandatory for all state-owned enterprises. It applies to employees with a standard five-day work week.
Meanwhile, private employers can decide on this issue at their discretion. The state has reserved the right to give their employees additional days off.
