Caribbean paradise in Scotland: the British island impresses with its white beaches

Harris Island

You can look for exoticism not only in distant countries. Few people associate Scotland, for example, with warm seas and summer vacations. But experienced travelers know that the real pearl of a beach vacation is hidden in the southern part of the large island of Lewis and Harris in the Hebrides.

Harris is often compared to the Caribbean. The Mirror has provided the details.

Harris is the southern part of the island of Lewis and Harris in the Hebrides, the northern part of which is occupied by Lewis. By the way, neither English nor Gaelic has any other name than Lewis and Harris, but some sources mistakenly call it Lewis, after the larger, northern part.

The border between the two parts runs along a conventional line connecting the eastern edge of Loch Resort and Loch Seaforth.

The main city of the island is Tarbert, located near a narrow isthmus between Loch Tarbert and West Loch Tarbert bays, which divide Harris into two parts.

The northern part of Harris has a mountainous and picturesque landscape. There is Mount Clisham, the highest point of all the Hebrides (799 meters).

The southern part of the island has a flat terrain, and due to its clean beaches and white sand, it is often called the Scottish Caribbean.

In addition to Tarbert, Rodel is worth a visit and a dip into history with the famous medieval church of St. Clement. There are ferries to the Northwest from Leverborough Pier. Interestingly, there are no bridges on Harris, and the connection between the islands of the archipelago is carried out by ferries.

"Staying for the summer season in Europe, travelers definitely do not miss out on exotic experiences, as there are many unusual places within reach. Traveling by ferry gives you a special freedom," said Abby Penlington, CEO of Discover Ferries.

With its pristine white beaches and bright blue waters, the home of Harris Tweed could be mistaken for a scene from a Caribbean brochure.

The tropical Luscantair is a secluded sandy expanse overlooking Taransay Island – the perfect place to admire the vibrant colors and listen to the lapping waves. The north of the island has a rugged, mountainous landscape, and the Bay area is beautiful with its many quiet bays.

Travelers are advised to stay at Scarista House, a former Georgian mansion in a picturesque location between the beach and heather-covered hills with amazing views of the Atlantic Ocean.
