Canadian National Hockey League (NHL) fans booed the US national anthem before an Ottawa Senators game on Saturday, hours after US President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on Canada. At the Canadian Tire Center arena in Ottawa, disgruntled spectators showed what they think about the executive order during The Star-Spangled Banner.
Singer Mandia began and ended her version of the American anthem to the sound of disapproving shouts. The booing began already with the first phrase "Oh, say can you see", but the singer ignored the detractors and continued to sing.
Her confident performance gradually calmed the stands. However, after the song ended, some fans continuing to protest, while a small group of other spectators supported the United States with loud applause, the New York Post reports.
The match between the Ottawa Senators and the Minnesota Wild ended with a score of 6-0.
Canadians, concerned about rising prices, were protesting the new 25 percent tariff imposed by the United States on all Canadian goods. This ruling included Mexican imports too.
In response, Canada and Mexico announced the introduction of their own tariffs against the United States. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum issued separate statements promising joint action.
Trump explained his decision by the need to fight illegal immigration and drug smuggling across borders.
"We need to protect Americans, and it is my duty as President to ensure the safety of all. I made a promise on my campaign to stop the flood of illegal aliens and drugs from pouring across our Borders, and Americans overwhelmingly voted in favor of it," he wrote on Truth Social.
