Buffy the Vampire Slayer will get a sequel: what is known about the series' relaunch

The cult TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer is getting a sequel, which is being developed for the Hulu streaming service. The project will be different from the original, but it will remain part of the wider Buffy universe.

The new series is being developed by screenwriters Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, known for their work on Poker Face and Fringe. In addition, Oscar winner Chloe Zhao, whose previous work includes Nomad Country and The Eternals, will take the director's chair, The Hollywood Reporter writes.

Despite numerous rumors, Hulu and 20th Television refrain from commenting on the details of the new project. However, it is already known that the central figure will not be Buffy Summers, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Instead, the plot will focus on a new younger slayer, and Gellar himself will not play the main role. This decision is a logical development after the finale of the original show, where the number of potential vampire killers was significantly increased.

Nevertheless, Sarah Michelle Gellar herself has changed her attitude to the relaunch. After a long period of rejecting the idea of returning to the role of Buffy, the actress said she was now ready to reconsider her decision. In a December interview, she noted that she had previously been against the idea of filming a sequel to the series, but now, after watching the success of reboots of series such as Sex and the City and Dexter, she is ready to consider participating.

This is the second attempt to relaunch Buffy after 20th Television worked on a project with Monica Owusu-Breen and Joss Whedon in 2018. At the time, however, this project was never released due to numerous problems in the development process. It's worth noting that Joss Whedon, who was the main creator of the original show, will not be involved in the new project, as his name has become associated with a number of scandals regarding the mistreatment of actors.

Zuckerman and Zhao will serve as executive producers of the reboot, and some of the original producers will also join the process. For example, Gail Berman, Fran, and Kaz Kuzui, who worked on the first show, will also appear as producers on this project. The series promises to be an interesting addition to the existing franchise.
