New movies hit Ukrainian cinemas

Recently, a documentary about our war with Russia, starring famous musicians, and a film by Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos with his favorite actress Emma Stone have been released in Ukraine, as well as an action movie with Dave Bautista, a famous wrestler and bodybuilder in the past, and a sci-fi movie with Jodie Comer and Benedict Cumberbatch.

There's also a creepy thriller, which is a remake of the famous Danish horror, and a historical film that resembles the Oscar-winning Parasite. OBOZ.UA will tell you about six new releases that you can watch on a big screen.

Kinds of Kindness

Cult Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer) returns to the big screen with a new film. The movie consists of three parts. The first one tells the story of a man who has escaped from his boss and is trying to rebuild his life. The second tells the story of a policeman who suspects that his wife, who disappeared many years ago and suddenly returned, is not really his relative. The third is about a woman in search of a spiritual leader. The same actors play in all parts but different roles.

Emma Stone (La La Land, Birdman, Poor Things) is the main favorite of the film. It had its world premiere at this year's Cannes Film Festival. The film competed for the main award, but the Palme d'Or went to the drama Anora.

Soldiers of Song

A touching documentary story about the war in Ukraine, told by musicians Sviatoslav Vakarchuk, Andriy Khlyvniuk, Svitlana Tarabarova, Kolia Serha, Ptashka (Mariupol defender Kateryna Polishchuk), representatives of the DakhaBrakha band, Mariupol Chamber Philharmonic and other performers.

Soldiers of Song was directed by American Ryan Smith, winner of the Emmy Award for the documentary NFL 360: Who If Not Us, which also tells the story of Ukrainians, American football players who stood up to defend the country at the beginning of the full-scale invasion.

Soldiers of Song had its successfully screening at this year's Tribeca Film Festival in New York, USA.

The Killer's Game

In the story, the protagonist of the bright Hollywood action movie Joe Flood (actor Dave Bautista, who starred in all parts of the Guardians of the Galaxy saga) is considered the best killer in Europe. The man falls in love with ballet dancer Maiz (actress Sofia Boutella, known for the movie Kingsman: The Secret Service). And while their relationship is taking shape, Joe is diagnosed with a deadly disease that is progressing rapidly. He hires killers to put him out of his misery. However, on the same fateful day, he learns the devastating news that the doctor has made a wrong diagnosis. Joe tries to cancel the order for his murder, but his fellow killers refuse to stop.

The screenplay is based on the book of the same name by the famous American playwright Jay Bonansinga, who is best known in cinema for his work on The Walking Dead franchise. The book, published in 1997, immediately became a hit. At the same time, there was talk of a film adaptation of the work. However, the project was approved and the cast was announced only six years later. Jason Statham was to play the lead role, but the cast was later changed.

The film was directed by J.J. Perry, a martial arts master, one of the most respected stuntmen and stunt directors in Hollywood. He has participated in the most high-profile movies, including Blade, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Total Recall, The Mechanic: Resurrection, Olympus Has Fallen, Transformers, John Wick, Fast and Furious 8, Fast and Furious 9, Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water. The Killer's Game is his calling card as a director.

Speak No Evil

The psychological thriller tells the story of an American family that meets a British couple on vacation in Italy and has a great time with them. When they return home, they receive a letter from their new friends inviting them to visit them for the weekend. The Americans pack their bags and head to a house in the middle of the woods, unaware of the tragic consequences this trip will have.

The creepy story was directed by James Watkins and is a remake of the 2022 Danish horror film of the same name. The main roles are played by James McAvoy (X-Men: First Class), Mackenzie Davis (Terminator: Dark Fate) and Scoot McNairy (Gone Girl).

The End We Start From

The film is set in the near future. Record-breaking rains cover the UK, causing London to go underwater. A pregnant woman (actress Jodie Comer, star of the cult TV series Killing Eve) is caught in her apartment by the natural disaster. She goes into labor as unstoppable streams of water break through the apartment. The woman, her newborn son and her husband manage to get out of the building and later out of the city.

For a while, the family takes refuge from the elements at the parents of the protagonist's husband, but after a few weeks they have to leave. At some point, the couple comes to the conclusion that they cannot go on together. And since then, the audience has been watching the story of a woman who saves herself and her son, hoping to reunite with her husband. The main character's husband is played by Joel Fry (Cruella). The film also stars Benedict Cumberbatch, the star of the British TV series Sherlock Holmes. The dramatic thriller The End We Start From was screened at the Toronto Film Festival and directed by the famous British director Mahalia Belo.

Coup!

The film takes place in the early 20th century during the Spanish flu epidemic. A wealthy American family decides to survive the lockdown in their mansion located in the suburbs of New York. The owners of the luxurious house announce the recruitment of a staff of servants to survive the difficult times in comfort.

Hollywood star Peter Sarsgaard (Boys Don't Cry) plays Floyd Monk, an adventurer who poses as a famous chef and is hired by a family. And step by step, he seizes power in an influential American family. According to critics, the plot of the film is somewhat reminiscent of  Bong Joon Ho's Parasite, which first conquered the Cannes Film Festival and then, in 2020, won the Oscar.
