Specialists began dismantling the monument in honor of Pereiaslav Council in Kyiv on Thursday, April 30. It is located in the city center under the Arch of Freedom of the Ukrainian people.

This was reported by an OBOZ.UA correspondent. The process of derussification and decommunization continues in the capital.

Thus, on the morning of Tuesday, April 30, utility workers and a crane were spotted near the monument in honor of the Pereiaslav Council, which is located under the arch of Freedom of the Ukrainian people. As it turned out, specialists began dismantling this monument following the order of the city authorities.

According to the municipal workers, who have already removed several figures from the pedestal, including the one symbolizing Moscow Ambassador Vasily Baturin (taken off by tying a rope around his neck), the work will last several days. It should be noted that the monument is quite massive and consists of 20 elements weighing about 6,000-7,000 tons.

It should be added that the monument was unveiled in 1982. It is dedicated to the Pereiaslav Council, a general military council convened by Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytskyi in Pereiaslav on January 8 (18), 1654, one of the episodes in the process of formalizing the Ukrainian-Moscow military and political alliance.

In the spring of 2022, the Kyiv City Council decided to decommunize the name of the Peoples Friendship Arch. It was renamed the Arch of Freedom of the Ukrainian People. Already in 2024, the Ministry of Culture issued an order depriving the Arch of Friendship of Peoples of the status of a historical monument. Accordingly, this monument can now be completely dismantled.

As previously reported, one of the city's business cards, the Arch of Freedom of the Ukrainian People, located in the center of the capital, will not be dismantled in Kyiv. Its meaning has been rethought, and the space near it will receive a new concept.
