Australian Open spectators intensify ovations for Svitolina after she writes "Love Ukraine" on camera. Video
Elina Svitolina (WTA No. 27), Ukraine's second seed, received strong ovations from the spectators at the stadium in Melbourne after her confident victory in the third round of the Australian Open. The 30-year-old Odesa native defeated World No. 4, Italian player Jasmine Paolini 2:6, 6:4, 6:0.
After her success in a tough match, the Ukrainian tennis player approached the TV camera and left a message to the whole world by writing "Love Ukraine" on it. This gesture made the audience at the Margaret Court Arena intensify their ovations.
In the interview, Svitolina emphasized that she was pleased to feel the support of Ukrainians in the stands, "We have this fighting spirit, we are fighting for what is ours."
For Svitolina, it was her 51th game against an opponent from the world top 5 and her 21st win. This is the second such success at a Grand Slam - she previously defeated Iga Świątek at Wimbledon 2023.
The Ukrainian has reached the 1/8 finals of the Australian Open for the fifth time. In the next match, she will meet Russian Veronika Kudermetova.
