Eco-activists filmed a video in which a sperm whale and its calf rose to the surface of the water. The animals were actively interacting with each other with the help of interesting click-like sounds.

The sperm whale has the largest brain among animals and is highly socialized, according to a study in Nature Communications. According to a team of researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), whale sounds include context and combination structures that make their messages very similar to human communication.

Activists are seeking to decipher whale codes to understand not only how the animals communicate with each other but also, perhaps, what they are talking about. The team uses robotics to record the mammals as they swim, as well as software tools and machine learning to catalog and associate animal codes.

These sperm whales are known to grow up to 30 meters in length. Hunting these gentle giants has been banned since the 1960s under an international treaty. Despite this, they still remain an endangered species.
